France plans to provide Libya with humanitarian assistance worth two billion euros ($2.9 bln), French Foreign Ministry spokesman Bernard Valero said on Friday.
"After a meeting between President [Nicolas Sarkozy] and the prime minister of Libya's National Transitional Council in Paris, we are working on specific assistance measures we can render Libyans on the national level," Valero told journalists.
"This is several billion euros or dollars, probably over two billion," he said.
The uprising against Muammar Gaddafi's 42-year rule began in Libya in February. An international military operation "to protect civilians" in Libya began on March 19 following a UN resolution.
Rebel forces are controlling large swaths of the country and most of the capital, Tripoli. Libya's rebel National Transitional Council (NTC) announced on Thursday it would soon start governing the country from Tripoli.
The NTC on Wednesday offered an amnesty, as well as a $1.3-million reward, for anyone who captures or kills Gaddafi.Yet the richest sector of French society are pledging another 3 per cent of their annual income to help the country battle its deepening debt crisis. That's as the French Prime Minister announces some 12 billion Euro worth of cuts, alongside gloomy forecasts for growth.
